It's only natural that you should want to know just who you have entrusted your pride and joy to. The Bike Bus was started in 2014 by GBC* and Tony, both are keen bikers with a particular liking for Meriden Triumphs...and MZs...and Moto Guzzi...and Bultaco...and there's a Yamaha in the shed....and a Honda....the list goes on!
With over 30 years in the transport industry, Tony (known as driver #1), has held prestigious contracts for the likes Wilf Green MZs and Spartan kit cars. His main bike is one of the last Thunderbird TR65s produced by the Meriden Cooperative, and I, (GBC) run a pack of Tiger Cubs & Terriers....some are on the road for regular riding and some are lined up as projects for a rainy day! We both enjoy taking the opportunity to get away on camping trips and are regular visitors to the Shetland Classic Vehicle show (the pic above shows a 1955 plunger Cub and a 1953 Triumph Terrier, and was taken on Unst, in the north of Shetland). The background photo on this page was taken in approx 2010 at the Darley Dale gala, when we were offered the loan of a Sunbeam outfit for the day, followed by a Brough Superior....
My background is a freelance motorcycle journalist, with a history of contributing to Classic Bike Guide, Old Bike Mart, Motorcycle Sport & Leisure, Camping Magazine, Real Classic and other lifestyle mags. For a number of years, I home-produced The Cub Mag which was a full colour A5 mag, dedicated to Meriden's finest motorcycle, the Tiger Cub! In my spare time, I was the VMCC's Area Representative for Scotland, as well as local section Secretary for the same Club, and Chairperson for the Grampian Classic MCC.
We started the Bike Bus in 2014 with an ex-Council Ford Transit mini bus, which we stripped out and converted to carry bikes. When we designed the methods we use, it was all based on "how would we want to transport our own bikes?". It took some trial and error and head scratching on the best ways to fit different bikes in and how to secure them properly, but fortunately we had plenty of our own bikes we could keep using for practice runs! Ramps and insurances were researched and invested in from the word "go". Within the first few months of trading, we quickly realised that a larger van was needed to cope with the volume of work and so we purchased our first VW Crafter. A year or so later, we had so much regular work that we decided to expand the business with two franchisees who undertook to move bikes in exactly the same way as we did. Jump forward now to 2020, our business model changed completely and now all of the vans (7 in total) are owned by us and all the drivers are employed by us. Each van is professionally kitted out using our own unique tie down methods - read more in the Transport Facts section.
Nowadays, GBC has morphed into the GITO - the Girl In The Office and I handle all the inquiries, bookings and schedules for the vans. Tony is still #1 completing regular trips throughout the UK every week. As well as the original Aberdeen base, we now have a depot in Derbyshire and the drivers there also cover the whole of the country.
The Bike Bus Team are all mad about bikes - we make sure of that when we add drivers to the Team. Between us, we write about bikes, own and ride them, build and work on them, some of the drivers have experience in a bit of racing. Best of all, we all get to work with them, providing safe and reliable transport options for trade and private customers throughout the UK and Northern Ireland.
