Are We Insured? Yes We Are!
Be very careful when choosing a firm to transport your motorbike, there is more to it than you think! Anybody involved in the 'motor industry', whether they be an upholsterer, mechanic, car salesman or a motorcycle transporter, is required BY LAW to hold a valid motor trade insurance policy. That is totally different to a commercial or business insurance policy, and it is a world away from a general courier policy - both in price and what it covers.
Whilst phoning around different insurance companies to get advice on this subject, we were told in no uncertain terms that insurance providers WILL NOT include the carriage of MOTORCYCLES under a couriers policy. Nor does it work to have the couriers policy and add on a Goods in Transit or even a Motorcycles in Transit policy. This is not going to stand up under a claim, as the vehicle in which the bike is being transported, is not insured for that particular use. It's similar to using your private car for business use and not declaring it to your insurer. If you have a bump whist making a business trip, you will not be insured.
If the vehicle carrying your bike is uninsured and stopped for a routine check, or worse, involved in an accident, it, along with the contents, will be impounded - at the very least you have a headache trying to get your bike back.
Something else to think about is if you book a 'man with a van' who usually transports washing machines and bric-a-brac, but has given you the cheapest quote - do they carry wheel chocks, straps, padding and soft ties in their van for that odd occasion when they pick up a motorbike?Do they have a fixed ramp that folds into the back of the van? These items all take up valuable space for a courier who tries to fill every inch with paying goods, so it's unlikely that they will be sufficiently equipped to safely secure motorbikes.
The Bike Bus is more than happy to provide a copy of our insurance via email for prospective customers.
